Learning outcomes
|
The Bohemian lands were traditionally a bilingual territory, politically and culturally very closely linked to the Holy Roman Empire, later the German Confederation and finally the Austrian Empire. The seminar pursues three objectives. First, the problems of the conception and terminology of language policy discourses will be explained, and then these will be applied to the situation of Czech-German historical territorial bilingualism. Specifically, learners will learn about the consequences of language policy for the population in changing political conditions. Finally, the language policies of traditional European multilingual states and the European Union will be critically analysed.
- gain an insight into Czech-German society from the perspective of language policy, - acquire theoretical sociolinguistic terms and definitions and gain an overview of the development of German-Czech language politics in the last two centuries, - analyze historical sources with regard to language issues and apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.
