Examples of possible topics: - Theory of the state and utopia in baroque literature - Philosophy, aesthetics and literary theory in the Enlightenment - The French Revolution as a challenge for literature at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries - Literary strategy in the 19th century (novel, drama, lyric) - Historicism, positivism and realism in the second half of the 19th century - The issue of literary avant-garde at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - Transformations of drama in the 20th century - Mass media and their influence on literary life in the 20th century (the influence of film on modern novel and drama, transformations of canonization mechanisms, the role of trivial genres) - Literature, politics and power in the 20th century (literature in fascist Germany, in exile, in the GDR) - the crisis of language and the problem of identity in Austrian literature of the 20th and 21st centuries

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to broaden and deepen the student's knowledge of his / her bachelor and follow-up master's degree in the history of German language literature from the Old German to the present, taking into account both synchronous and diachronic view of literary history.
The doctoral student has a very good knowledge of the history of literature of German-language literatures, both in the wider literary-historical and historical-philosophical context of the given literary period and in the development of individual genres.
