Course content
1. Lexicology - partial and related disciplines 2. Language sign, word and lexeme 3. Lexical meaning and its complexity 4. Motivation of lexical meaning 5. Syntagmatic and paradigmatic interlexical semantic relations 6. Varieties of contemporary German (regional, social and functional stratifications) 7. Changes in German vocabulary I - neologisms, archaisms / historisms 8. Changes in German vocabulary II - acquisition of foreign lexic 9. Changes in German vocabulary III - changes in the semantic component (intentions and extensions) 10. Word formation - introduction and basic terminology, word-formation means and their classification, selected methods, types and models of word formation, methods of word formation 11. Introduction into phraseology - subject of research, basic features of phraseology, their classification

Learning outcomes
Students will get acquainted with the basic topics, questions and problems of the lexicology of contemporary German, including word formation and phraseology.
The student is able to explain what the subject matter of lexicology is, can define basic lexicological concepts and understands the nature of changes and developmental tendencies in vocabulary.

To receive credit - Active participation in seminars - Oral ppt presentation on one the seminar topic - Written test Exam: The oral exam demonstrates both theoretical knowledge and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge while analysing specific language examples.
