The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected literary works, their film versions, and films with socially critical topics from the 1960s and 1970s, and some contemporary ones, which (re)thematize the issues of these decades. Students will gain insight into the cultural and political context of the period, and ways of their artistic reflection. Comparing the text with the film version will reveal the relationships between the two media and their reception. With the advent of new German cinema in the 1960s, realistic works dealing with social conflicts and the inner life of characters began to be promoted in literature, film (and theater) in then West Germany. During this period, works by left-wing authors such as Günter Grass's 'The Tin Drum' (1959) or Heinrich Böll's 'The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum'(1974) were produced. In the GDR, on the other hand, in the same period of time there is a critical depiction of life in a totalitarian regime, with literature and films gaining political overlap. After the year 2000, German-language literature and cinematography return to the master topics from the past, such as World War II and its consequences, the tumultuous 1960s, or life in the GDR. The subject of discussion will therefore also be dealing with historical traumas from various historical positions.
