Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the founding cultural-theoretical concepts that have shaped European thought and culture from antiquity to the present day and to lead them to critically reflect on the concepts of "European culture" and "European identity", not least in the context of recent developments. Students will learn about the various aspects of European cultural history and their impact on the German-speaking cultural space, viewing Europe as a specific "space of cultural communication" in which various cultural influences and traditions converge. Particular attention will be paid to the myth of Europe, its instrumentalization and transformations, using the example of the visual arts.
Students will be able to critically reflect on concepts related to European culture and identity.
