1. Introduction, course definition, reading assignment, and requirements for credit and exam. 2. Germanic tribes at the time of migration of the peoples to the shaping of the first state units, first written monuments. 3. Early and High Middle Ages. Colonization and settlements in the eastern territories. 4. Late Middle Ages. Consolidation of the power of territorial states and the decline of the Empire, the Hanseatic League. 5. The rise of Swiss statehood and the historical development of the Swiss Confederation. 6. Modern Age - Humanism, Renaissance. Letterpress, Heliocentrism. 7. Reformation. Hus, Luther, Zwingli, Calvin. 8. Religious wars. Bohemia after the Thirty Years' War. 9. Absolutism in Germany. Baroque. 10. Prussian-Austrian dualism. Classical German philosophy, German Enlightenment. 11. Influence of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars on German and Bohemian societies. 12. Restauration and revolutions. German culture in the Vormärz epoch. 13. Industrialization and its impact on society.

Learning outcomes
|
Students will get a comprehensive chronological overview of key events in political history and cultural development of the German-speaking cultural community from the early Middle Ages to the formation of national societies in the Habsburg Monarchy, and the establishment of the German national state in 1871. Furthermore, they will learn about the geographical delimitation of the German-speaking areas, and respective changes in political systems. Special attention will be paid to Czech-German relations. Finally, students will learn about important personalities of German cultural history since the end of the 19th century who have become part of the collective national memory of today's generation of Germans and Austrians.
The student - is able to work critically with German-language primary and secondary sources; - is able to identify a problem independently and interpret the text; - improved their ability to argue in discussions; - improved in writing; - expanded vocabulary in the field of history and culture; - is familiar with the geography of the German-speaking area; - is familiar with the historical and cultural development of German-speaking areas.
