Learning outcomes
|
This course concerns Czech-German relations in music, against a background of general history. We will proceed chronologically, and examine those stages in the development of music that involved significant and mutual cultural inter-penetration, i.e. the influence of German musical discourse on Czech music, and the inspiration drawn by German composers from Czech and Moravian music. The course will involve listening to excerpts.
The student - Knows the basic stages in the development of German and Czech music, and the main figures - Can place the development of classic music into the wider general historical context - Can detect mutual cultural influences from German to Czech (and vice versa), as well as influences from literature (i.e. adapting literature to music)
