Course content
1. Interpretation I: hermeneutics, interpretative methods and approaches 2. Interpretation II: interpretative principles 3. Analysis of macro-structure and micro-structure 4. Poetry I: theme, material and motif; the lyrical subject, content (paraphrase) 5. Poetry II: formal analysis (verse, rhyme, stanzaic forms, rhythm, metre) 6. Poetry IV: basic poetic forms (sonnet, song, epigram etc.) 7. Poetry V: imagery, tropes and figures, the word in poetry, and the syntactical construction of the text 8. Narrative Literature I: plot, story, paraphrase 9. Narrative Literature II: author/narrator, narrator's perspective, constellation of characters, time and space, compositional structure 10. Narrative Literature III: basic epic forms (epos, novel, novella, short story, fairy tale) 11. Drama I: basics of interpretation (plot, structure, conflict) 12. Drama II: basic forms (classical drama) 13. Drama III: basic forms (modern drama)

Learning outcomes
This course develops the basic skills to analyse and interpret a text. Such skills are essential for subsequent literature courses. The seminars encourage the formal and content analyses and the basic interpretative approaches to the texts of various genres. The focus will be on close reading.
The student - Masters the terminology and basic literary theory - Can carry out an independent formal analysis and interpretation of a text
