Course content
Survey of Themes: 1. "Migration literature" in Germany, the definition and development of the notion, location of the authors of the Czech origin in the context of migration literature, in the German-language environment, critical reflection of the concepts of the nation (Jiří Gruša: "Heimat und die Hürden", Ota Filip: "O ty můj milý cizojazyčný domove!") 2. Situation in Czechoslovakia after the year 1968: "normalization" and its consequences, Czech exile literature in German-speaking lands. 3. The selection of the German language as a literary language (change of the literary language in the old generation- Gruša, Filip, Kohout, conscious selection in the younger generation - Moníková, Faktor, Konecný, Fusek, Stavarič) 4. The change of literary language and its influence on the thematic and language rendering: Jiří Gruša - motifs of a island, the loss of one´s country, isolation and the poet´s ambivalence in the collections of poetry Der Babylonwald, Wandersteine), Grušas Wacht am Rhein, The 1999 Dresden Associate Professorship of Poetics 5.-7. The loss of the country and its literary imagination as a utopia: I. Czech history and its satirical expression in the novel Café Slavia by Ota Filip II. (De)construction of Czech myths on the example of the novel Die Fassade Libuše by Moníková III. The lost country as a projection of children´s memories in the novel Georgs Sorgen um die Vergangenheit by Jan Faktor 8. Franz Kafka´s influence and intertextual relations to his work in the novels Schornstein by Jan Faktor and Pavane für eine verstorbene Infantin by Libuše Moníková, her essays Schloß, Aleph, Wunschtorte 9. The language experiment: experimental works of Jan Faktor (the essay "Fremd im eigenen Land", Faktor´s experimental texts, influence of concrete poetry), experimentally creative literature for children and youth by Michael Stavarič 10. Jaromir Konecny and his path from slam poetry to the successful author of short stories (Slam stories, Aus dem Geschlechtsleben eines Emigranten) 11.-12. Hybrid literary figures standing on t he line dividing two worlds: I: Oscilation between his own world and somebody else´s world in confrontation of two cultures and languages in Novemberfäden by Katja Fusek II: Creation of the "third" space "between".. on the example of the novel Terminifera by Michael Stavarič 13. Problematic issues of translations and two-language versions: e.g. with the novel Der siebente Lebenslauf by Ota Filip in two-language variants, different reception of the novel in the Fed. Rep. of Germany and in the Czech Republic. 14. Summary: similarities and differences in the works of individual authors and their classification in the area of "migration literature", problems associated with translations and reception of their literary works

Learning outcomes
This seminar is a thematic follow-up to the course "Theory and methods of Intercultural Investigation"" and focuses on numerous aspects of (emigration literature from the Czech lands after 1968, which is associated with the wave of emigration and departure of Czech inhabitants abroad after the changes in the political situation in Czechoslovakia. In the forefront of our interest there will be migration to German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), influence of German as a literary language, its impact on creating identity in the new language environment and on the thematic and language rendering of the given themes/issues in the selected literary works. The accent will be put in particular on the intercultural aspect of mingling two cultures and languages,(de)construction of one´s own and somebody else´s picture, imagination of the lost country, hybrid models of existence on the dividing line, etc.
The student will acquire an ability to apply theoretical knowledge to literature written by authors of the Czech origin.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit requirements: active participation in seminars based on reading primary texts , oral presentation or a seminar paper. Examination: Oral examination tests the ability of the student to analyse and interpret literary works from the intercultural point of view in the wider cultural and historical context on the basis of reading and studying professional literature.
