The course introduces the theoretical principles of representation. We understand representation in the sense of a doubling of the represented object that is oriented by an aperture or perspective (see, e.g., Marin 1994 and Marin and Cantillon 2005). Viewed in this way, representation is also related to cultural memory and is power-oriented. Representations therefore feed back into our perceptions (examples of representations of power range roughly from portraits and signs of important historical figures, to their reflections in the landscape and the arrangement of shared space).
