1. "state" of the pre-modern era 2. The modern state as a form of political dominion 3. The concept of a sovereign state 4. Developmental tendencies of the modern state 5. Raison d'État 6. Modern state and church, state and society, state and nation 7. Totalitarian and authoritarian states/regimes 8. Democracy: quality vs. quantity 9. Legitimacy of the state, types of legitimacy 10. New vs. traditional functions of the state 11. Transnational integration, internationalization, regionalization of globalization 12. Multicultural state 13. The end of statehood? 14.
