Course content
1. Ideas about tzhe Czech statehood in the years 1848-1918. 2. The emergence of the Czechoslovak state as one of the three transformation models in Central Europe. 3. Political elites of the interwar Czechoslovakia. 4. Programs and emancipation processes 1918-1938. 5. Czechoslovakia in European politics in the 1930s and 1940s. 6. State system and legislation in the years 1938-1945. 7. Restoration of the state in the era of the Cold War. 8. Changes in property relations after 1945. 9. Social reality of Czech society after the Second World War. 10. Advent and consolidation of the communist regime. 11. Persecution of citizens as a form of state policy. 12. Nations and nationalities in a common state. 13. Changes in statehood - from the reform of 1968 to the restoration of democracy in 1989.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the traditions and development of Czech politics and selected areas of state policy and state institutions in the Czech lands and Czechoslovakia during the 20th century with an emphasis on the period of existence of a common state of Czechs and Slovaks in 1918-1992. The interpretation includes the political, social and cultural changes that Czech society in particular has undergone. The international context will also be monitored and attention will be paid to the beginnings of modern Czech statehood in the period after the fall of communism and on the path to the division of the common state.
The student is able to use professional terminology. The student is able to characterize the concept of statehood. The student is able to clarify the influence of basic systemic changes in the 20th century on the development of Czech (or Czechoslovak) statehood. The student is able to characterize the political, social and cultural changes that Czech society has gone through.
