Course content
1) The concept, causes and types of violence 2) Domestic violence and its forms 3) Violence and bullying at school and in the workplace. 4) Displays of violence in social relations and crime. 5) Crime and Punishment 6) The issue of death penalty. 7) The political use of violence. 8) The insurrection, civil war, revolution. 9) The state violence, the question of legitimacy. 10) Pacifism. 11) Realism.

Learning outcomes
The course will get students acquainted with general overview of the issue of violence. The main topic will be the displays of violence in modern society, such as domestic violence, bullying, sexual violence, crime, political use of violence during demonstrations, the legitimacy of the use of violence by the state, the issue of insurrection, civil war, revolution and war in general. In the course, reading of selected classical texts and their interpretation, presentation of own study results and discussions will be included.
The student will gain the following professional knowledge: - can characterize the basic concepts of the topics citizen - civil society - democracy and its place in today's world - can use appropriate technical terminology - can clarify and exemplify the basic principles and values of a democratic society - can explain and exemplify the problems associated with active citizenship in the democratic society and the problems of contemporary democracies

Assessment methods and criteria

Participation 60%, presentation. An essay on the topic of current political discourse on democracy in the extent of at least 7 pages, using two other secondary sources.
