1. Origins of modern philosophy: the intellectual situation of the late 16th and early 17th century. Fundamental characteristics of modern and contemporary philosophy, their main epochs. 2. René Descartes. 3. Early modern epoch: Hobbes, Spinoza, Malebranche, Locke, Leibniz. 4. Central modern epoch: Berkeley, Hume, Rousseau, the Enlightenment. 5. Immanuel Kant. 6. German idealism, its supporters and opponents: Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, Kierkegaard, Marx. 7. Utilitarism and positivism: Bentham, Comte, J. S. Mill, pragmatism. The rest of 19th century. 8. Phenomenology I: Brentano school, Edmund Husserl. 9. Phenomenology II: Martin Heidegger. 10. Phenomenology III: Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Gadamer, Levinas, Patočka. 11. Analytic philosophy I: Frege, Russell, Moore, early Wittgenstein. 12. Analytic philosophy II: Vienna Circle, later Wittgenstein, Oxford school. 13. Analytic philosophy III: Popper, Kuhn, Quine, Rawls, contemporary scene. 14. The rest of 20th century: Marxism and the Frankfurt school, structuralism, deconstruction, postmodernism.

A survey course of modern and current philosophy, with emphasis both on the mail lines of development and the greatest figures. Students will understand the topics exposed and will be able to continue with further reading.
Students will be able to teach the topics from the course on very elementary level. They will be better prepared for further studying in the field. |
