Course content
1. Introduction. Definition of historicism. 2. History, pre-modern classification of knowledge and modern world picture. 3. The beginnings of hermeneutics. 4. Schleiermacher's hermeneutics and its foundations. 5. Wilhelm von Humboldt, philosophical and political context. 6. Humboldt's texts on history and historiography. 7. On the historian´s task 1. 8. On the historian´s task 2. 9. J. G. Droysen, philosophical and political context. 10. Droysen's methodology. 11. "Historical forces" and their knowledge. 12. Critical discussion, comparison of Humboldt's and Droysen's models. 13. Final colloquium.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on understanding the intellectual contexts and theoretical foundations from which academic historiography grew as an independent professional discipline in the early 19th century. Critical reflection on the anthropological and philosophical assumptions of selected methodological projectss of leading German theorists (especially W. Humboldt and J. G. Droysen) will lead to a reflection on the connection of historical narrative and collective identity and to a discussion of the question to what extent the emergence of classical historiography in the 19th century was necessarily influenced by a power-expansive and identity-intolerant understanding of nationalism.
The student will acquire the following expertise: - is able to reflect on the philosophical dimensions of historiography - be able to clarify its key epistemological problems - can reflect on historical knowledge in its assumptions - be able to place historicism in the context of German philosophy and literature of the so-called Goethean era

The course ends with a credit. It can be obtained on the basis of a colloquium. It requires active participation in class, preparation of a short interpretation of the texts discussed and 75% attendance.
