Learning outcomes
The course Populism in Czech Politics focuses on a basic introduction to the issue of populism, current research findings and their subsequent application to contemporary Czech politics. The aim of the course is to examine the issue of populism and to introduce the role of the media in the spread of populism, especially in social networks. The course will focus on theoretical issues related to populism, the role of political actors in the process of populist political communication, but also on the influence of the media (social media) on the spread of populism. The topic will be discussed in the context of contemporary communication of Czech political actors.
The student will be able to use professional terminology. The student will be able to characterise and describe the academic approaches to populism. Understand the relationship between populism, political actors and the media.

Assessment methods and criteria

A minimum of five points is required for successful completion of the course. This is to be achieved by presenting one's own research, which should focus on populist political communication in the context of the European Parliament (EP) elections and regional and senate elections scheduled for 2024. A score of 0-3 points will be allocated for this component. 2) Research report: A score of 0-3 points will be allocated for this item. 3) Active participation in the seminar. This refers to active engagement in the joint discussions and orientation in current events. Passive physical presence will not be considered for this activity. A score of between zero and four points will be awarded. To receive credit, students must complete requirements 1) and 2). Otherwise, no grade can be awarded, and the course must be repeated in the upcoming academic year. In the event of an absence, a make-up examination will be held in the form of a written test comprising four open-ended questions on the material covered and the assigned readings. The deadline for the assignment of research topics is 23 October 2024. Students will select their own research topics in consultation with the instructor. The deadline for the submission of research reports is 5 January 2025. It should be noted that the aforementioned deadlines are non-negotiable. Papers submitted after the specified deadline will not be considered.
