1) What is hermeneutics? Definition of hermeneutics, philosophical hermeneutics and hermeneutic philosophy. Basic hermeneutic concepts: understanding, meaning, interpretation, hermeneutic circle, criticism 2) Brief history of hermeneutics in ancient, medieval philosophy. Alexandrian School, Augustine, Four-Sense Hermeneutics, Hermeneutics in the Renaissance and the Reformation, in Philology and Theology, Luther, Melanchton, Spinoza, Chladenius 3) Romantic hermeneutics, German historical school, hermeneutics as a method, differentiation of humanities and natural sciences: Schleiermacher, Leopold von Ranke, Dilthey 4) Early Heidegger hermeneutics: Hermeneutics of facticity, hermeneutics and phenomenology 5) Hermeneutics of the meaning of being: Being and time 6) Gadamer's hermeneutics of art and history: Truth and method I 7) Gadamer's hermeneutic theory: History of understanding, speech and rhetoric, Truth and method II 8) Ricoeur's hermeneutics between psychoanalysis and structuralism: Essay on Freud, Conflict of interpretations 9) Ricoeur's narrative hermeneutics of time, memory and narration 10) Habermas: Hermeneutics of the logic of social sciences, critical hermeneutics 11) Habermas: Hermeneutics in the theory of communicative behavior and in discursive ethics and the theory of democracy 12) Transcendental hermeneutics and pragmatics of Karl Otto Apel in the theory of science and in discursive ethics 13) Poststructural hermeneutics by Umberto Ec, Richard Rorty and Jacques Derrida

Learning outcomes

Introduction to the history and basic issues of hermeneutics in Greek, medieval, modern and contemporary philosophy. Definition of hermeneutics in relation to theology, philology, law and literature. Hermeneutics as a method, ontology and critique. Ability to ask questions about the advantages and disadvantages of individual hermeneutics.
Knowledge of the basic features of the discussed hermeneutics. Orientation in their place and mutual relationship. Knowledge of ways of their study. Awareness of their advantages and disadvantages.
