Course content
|
1.The meaning of the word "metaphysics"; the changing notion of metaphysics in history. 2. The problem of the possibility of metaphysics; Kant's critique of metaphysics. 3. Problems of traditional metaphysics: Platonism vs. Aristotelianism; being and existence; the concept of being; the principles of being; the properties of being; the problem of universals. 4. Analytical metaphysics: inspiration and origins; a selection of problems (existence; individuals and properties; modalities, dispositions and possible worlds; the problem of essentialism; causality, determinism vs. libertarianism; distinction of the physical and the mental, monism and dualism).

Learning outcomes
|
Student acquaints with the notion and the history of metaphysics. The course includes also an introduction to contemporary analytical metaphysics.
The student obtain insight into the origin of, motivation for and varible understanding of the nature of metaphysics as a branch of philosophy. He gets acquainted with main topics of traditional and contemporary metaphysics and with the problem of the possibility of metaphysics.

Assessment methods and criteria

During semester the student constantly follows the lectures and is interested in the discussed topics. He/she collaborates actively in seminar. There is a final test.
