Christianity and ancient philosophy; Aurelius Augustinus; Boëthius; Eriugena; Anselm; problem of universals; Arabian and Jewish philosophy; the renaissance of 12th century; reception of Aristotelian philosophy in the West; medieval university; Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas; Old Franciscan School; Scotus; Ockham and via moderna; Renaissance and humanism; Reformation; Renaissance and Baroque scholasticism

Learning outcomes
The course concentrates on medieval conceptions of being, truth, good, and also on the relation between philosophy (or science) and faith in various periods of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The course presents the medieval understanding of human life and observes the remaining heritage of these ideas in the European thinking.
Student acquires orientation in the philosophical story of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, general knowledge of main problems of these philosophical periods, ability to recognize the historical origins of some constant topics of the European thinking.

During semester student constantly follows the lectures and is actively interested in the discussed topics. There is a final written test.
