Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the development of the Czechoslovak First Republic archival science and as a specific bearer of memory and tool of knowledge. Czechoslovak archival science of this period is known only through several dominant themes that have attracted the attention of previous researchers (archival separation from Austria, the so-called archive survey, the State Archive School). Of interest are regional archival sciences - municipal, city, estate - for which there is a large amount of hitherto essentially unused source material in the central funds of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The course will introduce this material, further work with it, combined with asking appropriate questions to these sources. Attention will also be paid to the intersections between archival science and politics - to what extent ideological postulates influenced the creation and operation of some archives. Finally, the question of the socio-professional structure of First Republic archivists in Czechoslovakia will also be addressed. The interpretation will be contextualized against the background of political, economic and social developments in Central Europe during the interwar period.
Students will gain a basic overview of the development of archival science in Czechoslovakia during the First Republic. They will be familiar with the issues of regional archival science of this period and will also master the typological source base that can be used for this study.
