Course content
1. Definition of numismatics, basic literature, relations to other fields 2. Development of scientific numismatics from the 18th to the 21st century 3. Means of exchange in global development from antiquity to the present 4. Sources of numismatics coins, written, pictorial sources, coin finds 5. Mining of precious metals (gold-bearing and silver-bearing districts in the Czech lands), coin production, socio-economic aspects of mining of precious metals 6. Pre-coinage, Celtic coinage, Roman coins in our territory, Great Moravian period 7. Denarius period of Czech numismatics (10th-12th centuries) coins as a means of payment and as an expression of princes' representation; organization of coinage and bracteate currency in the 13th century 8. Coin reform of Wenceslas II. and Prague groschen, coinage development of the late Middle Ages 9. Economic development and coins in the early modern period I. (period of tolar currency) 10. Economic development and coins in the early modern period II. (period of conventional currency) 11. Excursion 12. Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to numismatics as one of the auxiliary historical sciences, to define the position of numismatics among other historical sciences and to point out its sources, methods and goals. In the practical part, students are introduced to basic and supplementary literature, the history of money from primitive means of exchange to contemporary means of payment, their inclusion in the context of economic, administrative and social development. Emphasis is placed on describing the numismatic development in the Czech lands (from Celtic coinage to the 20th century) against the background of economic history. Furthermore, students are informed about the basic principles of processing numismatic material (especially of found origin) and the possibilities and limits of its source value.
The student is able to present the basic outlines of the development of the use of money in the Czech lands. He is able to characterize individual periods in terms of the currency used. He is aware of the raw material relations to the production of coins, he is able to identify the basic monetary material.
