Learning outcomes
|
During the course, students will learn the basics of the history of manuscript and printed books. In connection with this topic, attention is paid to the history of libraries in the Czech lands and in Central and Western Europe in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. The basic terminology and basics of describing manuscripts and old prints are also introduced. Students will also learn about the practice of operating professional institutions that manage historical book collections.
The graduate should understand the description of manuscripts and old prints and be familiar with various types of cataloging records and master the currently valid national and international standards for cataloging manuscripts and old prints. The student should be familiar with the history of book culture in the "Latin" cultural area of Europe, in close connection with the history of culture and communication, and should also have an overview of the most important historical book collections in institutions in the Czech Republic and the basic literature in the field.

Assessment methods and criteria

Verification of study results will take place in the form of a written test. The basic conditions for completing the course will be, first of all, active participation in seminars combined with the presentation of a paper on a selected topic of the history of book culture and, at the same time, a final written test based on the thematic areas taught. A prerequisite for completing the course will also be the preparation of a review of a selected title of current professional literature (domestic or foreign) in the field of the history of book culture, or from a wider range of new cultural history with the topic of the history of books, education, etc.
