Learning outcomes
Based on the knowledge acquired in the course Latin I, to expand the student's orientation in selected areas of practical use of the Latin language, especially in diplomacy and epigraphy, based on written sources of predominantly Czech origin from the 14th to 19th centuries. The aim is the correct interpretation of documents, especially of a diplomatic and epigraphic nature, in the Latin language from this period (deeds, city books, registry records, inscriptions) and their correct translation into the Czech language. The course is therefore purely practically focused. Through examples, especially from the area of the most important diplomatic documents, students will gain an overview of the specific features of medieval and modern Latin and will be able to interpret texts of an official nature.
The student is guided to understand and master the grammatical structure of the Latin language, which will enable him to correctly interpret texts of a diplomatic and epigraphic nature. He will acquire a specific lexical syllabus and knowledge of a number of syntactic phenomena typical of selected types of sources. He will gain awareness of the system of contractions and suspensions in diplomatic and epigraphic production. The aim is to achieve a basic level of linguistic and factually correct translation of Latin texts and their interpretation in specific contexts.
Prerequisites
1. Latin I. 2. The prerequisite for the study is a basic knowledge of the grammatical and syntactic categories of the mother tongue, including terminology in the Latin language. Knowledge of one of the non-Slavic European languages is also suitable for comparison with the Latin language and understanding its significance in the European civilization circle.

Assessment methods and criteria

A written credit test, verifying the mastery of grammatical categories and the ability to translate and interpret diplomatic and epigraphic texts. Individual exercises of the test are evaluated according to difficulty, the maximum is 20 points, the minimum is 11 points.
