Learning outcomes
The aim of the course Introduction to Archival Science I is to familiarize students with the basics of archival theory and methodology in a broader European and historical context as well as with the development of archives since the Middle Ages and their current organization. Great attention is paid to specialized archival legislation in historical development, also in comparison with legislation in other European countries. Attention is also paid to the changing paradigm of the field in connection with the mass use of electronic documents and information technologies in general, bringing new possibilities in the recording and making archival materials accessible, but also to certain current problems in ensuring the safe and long-term storage of digital documents.
The student is able to define archives in the context of the activities of memory institutions. He is able to present their historical development from the Middle Ages to the present day, both in the global and especially Czech context. The student is able to describe the current archive network in the Czech Republic and is able to define and systematize the types of material stored in archives.
