Course content
1. Overview of the development of the study of ancient and medieval Latin script, terminology. 2. Periodization of Latin script; the emergence of the Latin alphabet and the beginnings of Roman script. 3. Roman script until the middle of the first millennium AD. 4. National scripts. 5. Abbreviation systems. 6. Carolina and diplomatic minuscule. 7. Gothic script - minuscule. 8. Gothic script - semi-cursive. 9. Gothic script - cursive. 10. Script of Czech royal documents of the 13th - 14th centuries. 11. Book script of the 13th - 14th centuries. 12. Script of official books of the 13th - 14th centuries. Writing numerals. 13. Bastarda I. 14. Bastarda II.

Learning outcomes
It allows you to become familiar with the development and main types of Latin script until the end of the Middle Ages and to practically learn the basics of reading the scripts used to write medieval texts until the beginning of the 16th century in the Czech lands. Emphasis is placed on the development of Latin paleography until the beginning of the modern era, its periodization, types of scripts and mastering the basics of reading diplomatic and literary texts from the 12th to the 15th centuries.
The student will acquire knowledge of paleographic terminology, writing materials and nomenclature of individual types of Latin script from the middle of the first millennium BC to the 15th century; knowledge of the development, periodization and basic types of Latin script. The student will acquire skills in reading, transliterating and transcribing legible Gothic minuscule and cursive; reading and writing out Carolingian and Gothic minuscule in short; and knowledge of methods with which it is possible to further deepen and improve the acquired basics of reading legible Gothic minuscule and cursive.
Prerequisites
They are not. Basic knowledge of Latin, solid knowledge of German.
