Course content
1. The invention of printing and the incunabula period in Bohemia and Moravia; 2.Printing in Bohemia and Moravia during the early modern period in the context of European developments; 3.The book trade and censorship in the early modern period in the Czech lands; 4.The early modern book and its reader (noble and burgher libraries); 5.Basic terminology for describing incunabula and early printed books, cataloguing, and working with scholarly reference tools (printed and online sources).

Learning outcomes
The student will gain an overview of the history of book culture in the field of printed books up to the year 1800 in the Czech lands within the context of European developments. They will become familiar with the methods of processing and cataloguing incunabula and early printed books in order to acquire competencies in working with reference tools for this type of source. The course concept falls within the methodological scope of book studies ? historical bibliography and the history of book culture. Special attention will be devoted to the contemporary reception of the printed book.
The student should acquire a basic overview of the history of Czech book culture in the early modern period within the context of European developments. At the same time, they should learn to work with the basic cataloguing tools used for recording incunabula and early printed books, and be able to navigate the specialized terminology used to describe this material.
Prerequisites
There is no requirement to have completed any specific courses. A passive knowledge of German or English is welcome for working with foreign-language scholarly literature on the topic of European book culture.

Assessment methods and criteria

Successful completion of the course will be based on passing a written test to verify the acquired competencies, as well as preparing a presentation based on a book or books on the topic of early modern book culture, chosen by the student.
