Learning outcomes
The aim of the lecture course is to introduce medieval and early modern epigraphy as an auxiliary historical science, including its overlaps with neighboring disciplines, especially art history (the explanation will only marginally concern ancient epigraphy). The basic starting points of the field (definitions, terminology) will be introduced, and its historical roots will also be outlined. Attention will be paid to both individual epigraphic carriers and the inscriptions themselves (inscriptional paleography). Emphasis will also be placed on the practical side of epigraphy, in terms of field research and archival heuristics (written sources for epigraphic monuments). It must not be left out to point out that it is necessary to perceive epigraphic monuments in the context of the development of written culture, or even directly as its specific manifestation.
Students are able to classify and characterize epigraphy as one of the auxiliary historical sciences. They are able to describe the development of epigraphic writing in our territory, as well as characterize various epigraphic carriers with regard to the functions of the inscriptions they carry in or on them. Students are able to place inscriptions within the framework of the written culture of the pre-modern era.
