The aim of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge of the practical paleography of the older period. This was a time of significant changes in the scripts used (especially the penetration of humanistic scripts), which, however, only gradually found their way into Czech and Moravian sources. The basic content of the course will be the instructed reading of selected texts and the related interpretation of paleographic, linguistic and content phenomena. The selection will cover a wide range of different texts, both in terms of content, form and function. In individual seminars, students will encounter common types of texts, such as documents, open sheets or accounting material, but also manuscript sources of a literary nature and, last but not least, inscriptional (epigraphic) monuments.
The student has in-depth knowledge of the field of paleography of the 14th-16th centuries, including cultural-historical overlaps regarding the spread and application of the written word in this form. The student is able to correctly read and interpret a wide range of selected sources from the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period. He/she is also able to work with printed texts and is able to classify and interpret the script of epigraphic monuments.
