The course aims to provide students with information about the historical development of German, both from a Germanic and cultural-historical perspective. The basic starting point will be a brief explanation of the history of German as a language, which will be followed by an explanation focused on the development of the language in our country. In addition to this theoretical part, emphasis will be placed primarily on working with historical texts, especially official provenances, which archivists encounter most often. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the German language of historical sources from roughly the 14th to the early 20th century. The selection of texts that will be worked with in the lessons will be adapted to archival practice and their examples will also demonstrate linguistic phenomena that will be theoretically explained at the beginning of the course. The key goal will of course be the understanding and translation of the studied texts and their historical-linguistic interpretation.
Students master the basic features of the historical development of German with an emphasis on the situation in our territory. Students are able to characterize and practically point out the basic linguistic phenomena that are typical for the relevant period of the development of German. They are able to recognize the basic dialectal elements in German historical texts originating from our territory in rough outlines. Students are able to translate and interpret adequately difficult German texts from the 14th-20th centuries.
