Learning outcomes
|
The course focuses on an introduction to the mechanisms of degradation of archival materials, ways to slow down this process, and ways to limit the potential risks of damage to archival materials. The main part will be devoted to preventive care for individual materials represented in domestic archives, their proper storage, and correct handling. As part of the course, students will learn about the appropriate climatic conditions for the long-term storage of individual items, the principles established for the short-term display of archival materials, and possible appropriate interventions in the event of unsuitable conditions and emergency situations. The course will also include an introduction to outpatient restoration interventions and an overview of suitable and unsuitable materials used in interventions on damaged archival materials.
Students will gain a basic overview of the ways in which individual archival materials degrade and the possibilities for slowing down or completely preventing such degradation. Students should be able to handle items from archival collections in such a way that they do not cause damage to the objects and will be able to at least roughly assess the condition of damaged objects.
