1. Introduction to codicology 2. History of manuscript libraries 3. The beginnings of European, Czech, and Moravian book printing and book trade until 1500 4. Libraries of various social classes in the 16th and 17th centuries in the Czech lands

Learning outcomes
Students get familiar with the bases of the history of manuscripts and printed books. Later they are acquainted with the history of libraries in the Czech lands and in central and western Europe in the period of Middle Ages and Modern Times. They also learn terminology and main principles of description of manuscripts and old prints. Students also have a chance to see the functioning of special institutions maintaining historical book collections.
Students will gain a basic understanding of codicology and library science. They will learn cataloguing rules for the professional processing of manuscripts, incunabula, and old prints. They will learn how to search for manuscripts and prints in the catalogs of libraries around the world. They will gain a basic overview of other social science disciplines that deal with the history of books (cultural history, media history, social history of reading, etc.).

In addition to passing a written exam, active participation in the classroom portion of the course is expected. Students will be required to prepare for the exercises as part of their self-study and give a presentation on a topic from foreign literature related to the history of communication or the social history of reading (knowledge of German or English is required), as well as prepare a review of a title from the field of book culture history (of their choice). Active and regular participation of students in seminars - discussions on the presented papers - is expected.
