Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with information in three basic areas. The basic and introductory part of the course focuses on current issues in the Czech language and provides a necessary review of students' knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and style. The current codification of the language will be presented in a partial manner, and students' attention will be focused on problematic phenomena in everyday written and spoken communication. The second section will focus on the requirements, essentials, and procedures for creating and presenting professional texts in the context of the field and the presentation of professional texts expected of graduates. The last important subtopic of the first section is related to this aspect and will focus students' attention on the range of typographical requirements for professional texts (with regard to the new typographical standard - ČSN 01 6910).
Skills and competencies are divided into two levels: 1) General and theoretical aspects of the field: - Students are able to describe the development of the Czech language in basic terms, outline the characteristics of individual stages of language development, and explain the main changes that these stages brought about. - They can distinguish between functional styles of language with a focus on technical texts. In this case, they master the basic principles - text structure, stylistics, and can use technical terminology appropriately. - They master the basic rules of computer typography. 2) Practical parts of the course: The course focuses on a concrete and practical level on mastering the grammatical, syntactic, and stylistic rules of the language. In this respect, it is an effort to balance the language skills of those students who show deficiencies not only in professional but also in everyday use of written and spoken language. In this regard, students will learn (or repeat) basic phonological, morphological, and lexical rules and elements.
