Course content
|
The teaching of the course in combined form summarizes these topics by individual teaching blocks: 1. overview of the development of the study of ancient and medieval Latin script, terminology 2. National scripts, Carolingian, diplomatic minuscule 3. Gothic script 4. Bastarda The students of the combined form of study are engaged in reading medieval manuscript texts in the framework of self-study, using the course outline and palaeographical readers, tasks assigned in the full-time part of the course or in the Moodle learning system, as well as on the basis of individual consultations with the teacher, carried out via the communication forum in Moodle or other electronic form.

Learning outcomes
|
This course introduces students to the development and main types of Latin writing up to the end of the Middle Ages. The aim of the course is to acquire the basic theoretical minimum, but above all to learn the basics of reading the scripts used in the texts of the sources in the Czech lands. Emphasis is placed on individual and collective reading of selected sources, always progressing from the simpler texts, which stand at the highest level of calligraphy, to the most difficult texts, written in cursive script.
Students have a theoretical knowledge of the development of writing in the Middle Ages. They are able to characterise the main developmental stages as well as to describe the changes in the use of writing in this period. They can read moderately difficult texts from this period. They also master the system of basic abbreviations found in diplomatic sources.
